Story

A Race Against Time: Kashmir Humanitarian Crisis

Over the last 70 years Kashmir has been one of the hottest conflict zones on the planet.

The ongoing tensions have wreaked havoc on the nation, killing thousands of people, destroying families & livelihoods, as well as driving the region deeper into crisis.

This has resulted in the displacement of thousands of people, who now have no real place to call home.

Extreme poverty is another cause that has a huge effect on the lives of many destitute people across Kashmir.

With many of the villages being rural & extremely remote, they are underdeveloped & families are forced to live in harsh conditions.

They lack the economic opportunities & means to break through the endless cycle of poverty.

The most vulnerable across Kashmir lack access to even the most basic of necessities, which include food, water, shelter, healthcare & education.

As a result, there is currently an urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

We must act now.

A Matter Of Life & Death: Food Insecurity In Kashmir

In Kashmir, millions of people go hungry every day & are unable to afford a balanced diet due to low incomes & high food prices.

Many will go days without food, unsure of where their next meal will come from.

Others will proceed to walk miles each day on an empty stomach through difficult terrain in order to obtain food as a result of insufficient transport to remote areas across the region.

They remain dependent on food aid for their survival & have little to no means to make ends meet.

Without a reliable food source, they are extremely vulnerable & exposed to ill health, malnutrition, disease & in severe cases death.

Running Dry: The Struggle For Water In Kashmir

In Kashmir, getting access to safe drinking water can be particularly difficult for those who are the most vulnerable.

Poverty struck families & children often have no option but to walk miles each day through mountainous terrain in search of water.

For them the struggle for survival does not end there, with many resorting to consume unsafe water from polluted rivers or streams which may be contaminated with bacteria, parasites or other pollutants.

Additionally, the absence of sanitation facilities can prevent people from leading healthy lives.

As a result, they are exposed, & more likely to contract illnesses/diseases such as typhoid, cholera & diarrhoea.

Denied The Basics: The Struggle Of Children In Kashmir

The extreme effects of poverty are particularly devastating on children across the region, as Kashmir suffers from high rates of child mortality due to the lack of survival resources.

The impact of severe poverty also affects children's ability to attend school & get an education as result of financial constraints.

Without an education, children across Kashmir will not be able to develop, succeed, or achieve their full potential.

This leaves them vulnerable, unable to learn, grow & stay healthy. They remain trapped in the endless cycle of poverty with hindered future prospects & limited opportunities.

The Unpredictable Threat: Natural Disasters

Over the years Kashmir has suffered from extreme flooding, earthquakes & other natural hazards, which have further contributed to pushing the region into instability.

In 2019, a devastating 5.8 magnitude earthquake caused numerous deaths, major infrastructure damage & chaos within the region, adding to the struggles of those in dire need.

As a result, countless families remain in crisis experiencing horrific conditions with no food, water or shelter.

The lasting Impact Of Covid-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound & detrimental effect on those in need of humanitarian assistance in Kashmir.

The economic downturn caused by the pandemic has pushed millions deeper in to poverty making their already difficult living conditions even worse.

For Kashmiri families, orphans, & widows already suffering from war, disaster & calamity, the COVID-19 outbreak has had a catastrophic impact on every aspect of their lives.

The crisis has increased the humanitarian needs of hundreds of thousands, who now face additional threats to their survival with an increased need of emergency aid.
