Bangladesh is a country in which 1 out of every 4 people are suffering from immense poverty.
Tens of thousands of struggling families, orphans, widows & children are in distress as they lack access to the basic necessities required for their survival.
One of the biggest impacts of poverty in Bangladesh is its effect on people who need urgent humanitarian assistance.
As it stands millions of people are struggling to make ends meet & facing extreme hardship on a daily basis.
They lack access to basic necessities which include food, clean water & medical care.
Across Bangladesh 22 million people are going hungry every day.
Many will starve for days on end whilst not knowing where there next meal will come from.
They are dependent on food aid for their survival & have little to no means to make ends meet.
Without a reliable food source, they are unprotected & exposed to ill health, malnutrition, disease & in severe cases death.
Access to clean water is a real struggle for the most vulnerable in Bangladesh.
Families & children often have no option but to walk miles each day in search of water.
However, the battle for survival does not end there, with many resorting to consume contaminated water from polluted rivers & streams in order to quench their thirst.
This puts them at an increased risk of ill health & disease which includes diarrhoea, cholera & typhoid fever.
Children are among those bearing the brunt of the crisis in Bangladesh.
Currently 49% of all children under the age of 5 are considered to be undernourished.
31% of all infants will also not survive long enough to celebrate their 5th birthday.
The impact of severe poverty is also felt by children many of whom may not be able to attend school due to financial constraints.
They have no choice & often start working from a very young age to support their families, which hinders their ability to learn, grow, stay healthy, & break the endless cycle of poverty.
Their future prospects are also affected as a result of the limited opportunities.
in addition to extreme poverty, flash floods & heavy monsoon rains are a regular occurrence in Bangladesh which cause widespread damage.
Each year many lives are taken, countless livelihoods are destroyed & homes ruined. For those already suffering from extreme poverty they are pushed to breaking point.
Now facing additional threats to their survival, they are forced deeper in to crisis & poverty, often for generations to come.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a severe lasting impact on those already suffering from poverty, crisis & instability across Bangladesh.
The economic downturn caused by the pandemic has pushed millions deeper in to poverty making their already difficult living conditions even worse.
The crisis has increased the humanitarian needs of hundreds of thousands of people who are now in desperate need of aid.
It is vital that steps are taken to ensure the basic needs of those suffering across Bangladesh are met, & that they possess the resources required to lead a healthy life.
