I did it!
On Saturday I thought I wasn't going to be able to do it - the heat was rising and I can't speak French. I began to get cold feet. But Sunday dawned - I was up at 5, had two cups of strong black coffee, a bowl of cereal and waited out the four hours.
We arrived at the Arc de Triomphe at 8.30 with what seemed like 3 million other runners, all with longer, thinner and more muscular legs than mine. I thought I was one of the shortest, roundest and certainly the most grey-haired of the runners I saw.
They set off with a burst of cheering and hurrahing, and twenty minutes later the back of the column broke into a slow trot - that's where I was.
As they say, the next 26 miles is history. If it hadn't been for the pompiers, aka the Fire Brigade, with their hosepipes and sprinkling of water I may never have made it (the temperature was 27C).
I arrived six hours later in one piece with two slightly swollen little toes, crept to a taxi, hobbled around all evening, and woke up this morning (Monday 16th) with no visible signs of trauma, little toes fine.
In retrospect the most challenging part was the training, but in actual fact it was the training that got me through. Thanks, Nick!
If you want more detail, you will have to send me an e-mail!
Thank you to all the sponsors who supported me financially, psychologically or practically and made this possible.
Kind regards, Carrie
