Story
Dexter was at the Virginia Beach SPCA as a transfer from Emporia, VA with no back story other than he was the next one to be euthanized. He wasn’t available for adoption the day that I saw him because he hadn’t been neutered yet, but they told me to come back in a week and I did just that. As I approached Dexters kennel he had a cone on his head, but he was so excited to see me like he had known me his whole life. I did a meet and greet as required and knew that he was going home with me .
In September 2019 I noticed that he was gaining weight and something wasn’t right, so I took him to the vet for a check up, but they didn’t notice anything wrong. Multiple vet visits, 2 different Veterinarians, and 4 months went by to result in him gaining over 50 pounds and having no interest in going on walks, rides, or to the park anymore. January 2020 was the turning point when I took him to see Dr. Humphries at Keys Animal Care Center and she diagnosed him by looking at him, but of course did the blood work to see what his levels were. The results came back with his thyroid not working at all he started on medicine immediately by March 2020 I had a totally different dog that was full of energy and was getting back to his normal self.
There isn’t a day that goes by that I’m not thankful for Dr. Humphries and her level of knowledge as a Veterinarian. I know he isn’t the only one out there with it, but I will always be his biggest advocate and share his story to help other animals that have this horrible autoimmune disorder. There is a picture collage of him before his thyroid gave up, during his 4 month process of looking for answers, and a little over a year of being on medicine.
Thank you for helping me raise money for the homeless animals in need of medical attention and many other things. Your donation will help save thousands of lives each year and I am grateful for your support!
