The
Project
Dean Newcombe (People Tree Ambassador and Model) and Sofi Bevan (People Tree
Model) will walk approx 420km this Christmas. From Christmas Day to New Years Day we
will walk from Japan's East Coast in Chiba to Japan's West Coast in Niigata to
raise awareness for Fair Trade production, the conditions of garment
manufacture in Bangladesh and to raise funds for People Tree's charity to
create further opportunities for future Fair Trade workers.
Walk 4
Work
The idea is to mimic the conditions of the sweatshop workers of India and
Bangladesh. Substituting walking for working. It is
suggested labourers are enduring 14-16 hours / day and receive
only 1 day off every 2 weeks in the worst conditions. Our plan is to walk 16
hours daily for the entire week. 7 days. 6am to 10pm with 1 hour of break /
daily. Not giving up will ultimately be more important than the numbers. A true
endurance challenge.
Why:
To raise awareness for Fair Trade and manufacture conditions in Bangladesh. We
are running this fundraiser to raising money for People Tree's training
projects in Bangladesh.
When:
Christmas day we will settle in Choshi in Chiba. Boxing day, 26th of December
their journey will begin.
Our journey will finish 10pm on New Years Day, 1st of January 2015
This is our way of giving a Merry Xmas to those who need it!
Who:
Dean Newcombe - Leader of the organisation Intrepid Model Adventures and People
Tree ambassador. Walking with Sofi Bevan - Model and TV presenter. We would
like to make our adventure open to YOU. You may join any day of the route, or
any part of the day. The pace is slow, so anyone is welcomed from 1 hour to 7
days.
Where:
From Choshi, Chiba, Japan's East Coast to Niigata Prefecture on Japan's West
Coast. Covering 60km / day, and stopping in Ibaraki prefecture, Saitama
Prefecture, Gunma prefecture and Nagano prefecture along the way.
Food:
It is suggested that a female garment worker enduring such long working hours
would need a minimum of 2,700 calories daily. In fact most workers are eating 3
meals of only 4-600 calories a day, creating a huge deficit in calories leading
to sickness and fainting during work. Sofi and I will try to also mimic
calories and foods. No energy bars and sports drinks, but instead 3 x 600
calories for Sofi and 3 x 800 calories for Dean (calculated roughly by
weight).
Many thanks for supporting us & giving generously to this great
cause!
We really hope that you will support us on this test of endurance. Please also spread their story using the hashtag #walk4work and @peopletree and help raise awareness for garment workers who work in sweatshop like conditions, and promote the fact that change is possible through Fair Trade!
Please donate generously though JustGiving and share the link with your family and friends, the aim is to raise £2000 for Swallows!
