In 2013, aged 16, I was diagnosed with scoliosis, a condition which causes curvature of the spine, resulting in your spine forming a C or S shape of varying degrees. Many people can have this condition without any significant side effects, however if the curve is severe enough, or causes extreme pain, surgery is currently the only real option. This surgery inserts metal rods and screws into the spine, to realign and fuse together the curved vertebrae so that they heal into a single, solid bone. At the end of 2013 I underwent an 8 hour operation to correct my S curve and then had a second surgery in 2018 to remove a small section of the metalwork, due to experiencing severe pain.
I’m running for Scoliosis Association UK (SAUK) to raise money for research, awareness and support for those affected, as well as showing that scoliosis should not stop you from doing anything!! When I was diagnosed SAUK were a huge source of information, support and have given me some amazing experiences since my operation.
I am beyond privileged to be ticking off running the London Marathon from my bucket list and running it for this amazing charity. Although 26.2 miles feels like a pretty long way, I’m so excited to run and hopefully call myself a marathoner at the end of it! Please donate what you can!
