Story
Vic climbed in the Lakes as a schoolboy and was delighted
when he introduced me to the fells and found I loved walking them as much as he did. We moved here 38 years ago to enjoy the fells on more than just holidays and long weekends. Having worked with mountain rescue when he was in the RAF Vic had a great respect for the Lakeland teams, and we never passed by a donation box without lobbing in a few coins or notes. As he’d say, there was a niggling superstition that if we paid our dues we’d never need them. But if we
did, our small contribution would mean they’d be there for us!
So when his son Alex suggested some friends might like to donate to some charity in his memory, we agreed there was no contest – it had
to be to a Mountain Rescue team, and the one that covered what we always considered ‘our patch’. Mountain Rescue teams come out at all times, in all weathers and conditions, and are volunteers totally funded by donations. Vic would have been so pleased to think they
benefitted in his memory.
They’ve kindly offered to put up a plaque on the wall that contains memorials to ‘their family’, and that he would qualify. And I plan to
scatter some of his ashes on our favourite walks. So respect that speck of grit stuck on the sole of your boots – it may be him…
