Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Running from Cardinal Vaughan’s birthplace in Gloucester to his final resting place at Westminster Cathedral, from 14 - 19 September 2014 school PE teacher Chris Bailey will run193 miles in memory of Cardinal Herbert Vaughan, third Archbishop of Westminster. A man of great energy and dedication to the Faith, Cardinal Vaughan, among many other things, founded the Mill Hill Missionaries, established the Catholic Truth Society, and built Westminster Cathedral. Following his death in 1903, hundreds of families gave generously to create a national memorial – our School – to challenge and inspire Catholics and the wider community.

Now that we, The Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School, celebrate the year of our centenary, we would like to remind Catholics of all that Cardinal Vaughan did to help us all to love and live the Faith.

A message from the man himself, Mr Chris Bailey:

After teaching at the Vaughan for 13 years and running to and from the School at least 4,000 times, 'Vaughan to Run' gives me the opportunity to put something back to the School for its centenary.

As a runner I have been named National Masters Marathon and Road Relay Champion, with a marathon personal best of 2 hours 33 minutes. I am also a Level 4 Athletics coach, encouraging young people to reach their potential in the sport. For me this is where the reward is, and I get as much pleasure seeing a first year boy score a personal best for the block run as seeing one of my pupils reach the English Schools final.

'Vaughan to Run' will certainly be a major challenge as recently I have been plagued with a reoccurring piriformis injury and have been averaging just 40 miles a week. Now I have just nine weeks to get the necessary training and the thought of covering 193 miles in six days is admittedly a little daunting. You can follow my progress online at www. vaughantorun.com and all donations, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated.
