Story
Thirteen exceptional Lebanese students have received offer letters and two-year scholarships with funding to attend one of the eighteen United World Colleges. However, without extra support, some are at risk of losing this once in a lifetime opportunity.
UWC Lebanon is running this fundraising campaign for two students who are partial scholarship holders to help them get to their UWC colleges this year. In order to secure their spots, we need to raise the funds by mid-May. Your support will make all the difference.
UWC is a global network of schools and educational programmes with the shared mission of “making education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future”.
Due to the current dire economic situation in Lebanon, it is almost impossible for the students and their families to raise these funds locally.
Here is what has happened and is happening in Lebanon:
A revolution started in October 2019 with the aim of removing the corrupt political class which controls the banking system and placed arbitrary capital controls on citizen’s savings.
The spread of Covid-19 shut down schools and left many without access to in-person and online education because of abysmal internet infrastructure.
The largest non-nuclear explosion in history devastated the Beirut Port in August 2020 and destroyed over 163 schools.
The Lebanese currency has lost more than 90% of its value, which has left the majority of families with little to no income or reserve funds.
In just under two years, Lebanese have found themselves reduced to just trying to survive, with the country’s youth facing a very uncertain future.
We are asking you to please contribute to our scholarship fund so we can give at least two of these Lebanese students a chance to get to UWC.
What is UWC?
“Central to the ethos of UWC is the belief that education can bring together young people from all backgrounds on the basis of their shared humanity, to engage with the possibility of social change through courageous action, personal example and selfless leadership. To achieve this, UWC schools and colleges all over the world deliver a challenging and transformational educational experience to a deliberately diverse group of young people, inspiring them to become agents of positive change in line with UWC’s core values”

Current status of funding:
UWC colleges have generously given Lebanon an unprecedented eight fully-funded and seven partially funded scholarships, totalling 74% funding overall.
However, most of those who hold partial scholarships will be unable to take up their places at UWC if they do not receive additional financial support by mid-May.
We hope to raise our first $7,000 to secure the attendance of a student for the first year at a UWC college.
The funds for this campaign will go into the UWC Lebanon account managed by the UWC International office in London. 100% of your donation will go towards scholarships.
The investment in youth education is a powerful impetus for stability in the Middle East, which is in constant turmoil. Your support will ensure that these students get a transformational education that will shape them into the kind of leaders their country so badly needs.
Details of Needed Support:
First Target: $10,000
Second Target: $20,000
Third Target: $25,000
Fourth Target: $30,000
Fundraising the total targeted amount will ensure that two exceptional students from Lebanon will each receive a full two-year scholarship (including tuition and full board) to a UWC college.
