Story
We are a group of trained University of Nottingham students who volunteer as Co-Responders with the East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) to provide high quality and life-saving, pre-hospital care to patients with life-threatening medical emergencies and injuries. Since the scheme's launch in 2014, we have volunteered over 20,000 hours and have been dispatched to 8,000 emergency 999 calls, positively impacting the lives of thousands of patients and families in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Thanks to our active, experienced and highly trained volunteers, we are proud to be the country's biggest and busiest university co-responder scheme.
With two ambulance response vehicles and specialist medical equipment, we arrive first on the scene to 71% of our dispatched jobs, enabling patients to receive vital emergency care quicker than it would otherwise have come. As full-time students studying intense healthcare degrees, we want to continue volunteering our limited free time where it is needed the most, with patients responding to 999 calls.
Unfortunately, our scheme is not cost-free, and we cannot operate without fundraising to cover the scheme's expenses, which pulls us away from the front line of attending to the most vulnerable in our community. If we were to receive continuous donations and sponsorship covering our operational costs (approx. £850/month), we would be able to invest all our time volunteering to provide emergency care rather than channelling our efforts towards fundraising to keep the scheme operating.
UoN Co-Responders are entirely financially independent from the ambulance service. To run the scheme daily, we rely on funding from corporate and individual donors, plus support from the University of Nottingham and its Student’s Union. Without the kind contributions we have received to date, we would not currently be operational.
We must cover the following yearly expenses to continue responding, which your donation will directly contribute to:
- Lease of two response vehicles (£7700)
- Medical kit and vehicle maintenance (£1000)
- Scheme Development (£700)
- New patient observations equipment (£300)
- Training new CFRs and training kit (£500)
- Uniform
We would like to invite you to donate, either one-off or regularly, or to sponsor our scheme. Thank you for your support in advance!
