About Ipswich Unitarian Meeting House
For over two years since our Property Manager Phil Chatfield worked on an in depth review of the Meeting House building, we have been aware of the substantial work which is necessary to ensure the fabric of our beautiful Grade 1 listed building will survive for future generations. Much of the work necessary is hidden in the walls and roof, but if not done to a suitable standard, we are concerned it will not continue to serve our congregation and future communities. An extensive grant application was submitted to Historic England and we are lucky enough to have been granted up to £421,000 as up to 77.1% of the total cost of the work involved, however we must make up the rest of the total through other donations.
The main body of work will start mid-February 2020 and will last through the summer time.
The first phase of work will concentrate on the South and West walls, followed by the North and East walls, roof work, external render and finishing and finally a toilet and access for people with a disability.
We aim to update this section of our website with photos during the project and will be inviting students and relevant professionals for ‘Hard Hat Days’ as this is a wonderful opportunity to train people in the historic craft work involved in such work.
