Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Started by the Royal Western in 1966, the Round Britain and Ireland double-handed race is one of the International classics of short-handed sailing, and over the years has attracted all the great names in yacht racing.

We will be racing in a J109 yacht, "Jangada Too".  The course runs clockwise around all of Great Britain and Ireland, starting from Plymouth with compulsory stops of 48 hours at Kinsale in Southern Ireland, Barra in the Outer Hebrides, Lerwick in Shetland and Lowestoft in Norfolk, where the hospitality is legendary.   The challenge is formidable - Francis Chichester deemed it such a tough challenge it was not safe to be sailed single handed - but thankfully, we will have each other!

The race takes about three weeks to complete and this year, partners for the race include the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), who are the official charity for the race.

The Communications and Public Service Lifeboat Fund (The Lifeboat Fund, for short) is proud to be the longest-serving supporter and one of the biggest single contributors to the RNLI.  The Fund is registered with the official regulators as a charity which fundraises throughout the UK.  The Fund was formed in 1866 by civil servants and since we are an ex- and current civil servant [Richard is ex-BT and Trevor works for Defra/AHVLA], we thought it would be a great idea to raise money for RNLI though this route, rather than directly.  Of course, every single penny donated will still go to the RNLI, but the Lifeboat Fund will help to raise the profile of the event within the public service and, more importantly, help us in our efforts to raise as much money as possible for this very worthy cause.

If you would like to know more about the race and follow our progress on a tracker, visit the race website at http://rwyc.org/rbandi/.  We will also be keeping a regular blog during the race, where you can also read up on our past adventures at http://jangada-too.blogspot.co.uk/
