Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Earlier this year, I was fortunate enough to be invited to Zambia for an unforgettable trip to explore this country and meet some incredible people during a trip organised by Mwai Yeboah as part of the Karen Tran Masterclass.
During my time away, our group was invited to Tongabezi Trust School (www.tujatane.com) funded entirely by donations. Our trip to the school proved to be an incredibly moving experience for myself and the other 15 or so guests I was with, and I wanted to set this page up to help spread the word as much as I could and hopefully to raise some funds for anyone who feels moved to do so.
Please take a look for yourselves at their performance during our visit by copying this youtube link - https://youtu.be/B2jyohJQ9nw
Vanessa Parker founded the school 23 years ago and has run Tongabezi Trust voluntarily for this entire time. This school changes the lives of hundreds of local Zambian children every day. In the words of the school:
"We provide a free, quality, holistic education to underprivileged and vulnerable Zambian children in the rural area of Simonga. We impart the skills and core values needed in order for our children to grow up into successful, kind adults who in turn improve the lives of those around them.
Our Food Programme ensures that each of our children receives a nutritious breakfast and lunch every school day. This takes a lot of pressure off parents and guardians as well as making sure the children are fully fuelled for learning.
We follow the Zambian curriculum, but receive no financial support from the government and rely entirely on funding from international donors and well-wishers. Our Educate a Child programme, which helps with the running costs of the school, also gives sponsors all over the world links with specific children at Tujatane."
The children themselves were fantastic - they were so excited that we had arrived to see them. They had made gifts and cards for each of us. They also sang, danced and performed for us. It was incredibly moving and I felt unbelievably fortunate for my extravagant UK lifestyle, and struck by the kindness, enthusiasm and warmth that we were shown. Virtually all of the children at the school don't have running water at home - something so simple that I would never even think about.
As I sat watching, the realisation of the very fortunate life I lead began to sink in. I travelled over 7500 miles to be there but hadn't thought twice about it or how fortunate I was to be have access to air travel etc. I was being treated like a VIP within an unforgettable trip including a safari, a night cruise & a mind blowing gala dinner. I was incredibly struck with just how lucky so many of us are and also how we didn't deserve the children's smiles and excitement - I had done nothing to deserve this and it brought a strong realisation of how important it is that we help those less fortunate than ourselves if we can. It was an unbelievably humbling experience and one I won't forget. This page is a starting point for helping to raise funds for a wonderful cause.
The funds received here are passed on directly to Tongabezi Trust School. Let's help raise some money for people much less fortunate than we are and help Vanessa, Natasha, Emma and the whole team keep doing what they do so well improving the quality of lives of so many children and families in Zambia.
These are life changing donations - please help if you can. Thank you.
