Story

Update - Jan 2011 - well I am disappointed to say I didn't meet the target by end 2010, and hadn't gone anywhere near it to be honest, much of it down to not prioritising this as I planned to do but also hurting my knee which put me off exercising. The knee is still not great but I am determined to make a significant dent in the weight loss by the end of 2011 - I'm not beating myself up but I have a big mountain to climb.

As a forfeit for missing the target I am contributing £50 to each of my charities and will pay £100 more to each if I don't make a big impact in 2011.

Thanks for those who supported me so far and sorry for letting you down but it has taken 40 yrs to put it on so maybe a couple of years to take it off would have been more realistic !

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

I'm calling my challenge "Pounds for Pounds" - losing weight but raising funds !!

At 39, I have decided to make some changes in my life before I hit 40 in February and during the year of my 40th birthday.

I have always struggled with my weight and I know that as I get older this is putting me at risk of some life threatening conditions and so I have decided to do something about it, particularly as my Dad died 20 years ago this year, at the age of 44, after suffering with Diabetes and Kidney failure for many years.

I've tried and succeeded / failed to lose weight in the past and like many have found it very tough - however I had some success last year losing a stone in a reasonably short time by making the right decisions and avoiding the wrong things, reducing portions and prioritising my weight and health over other things - not always easy with the busy work / renovation schedule we have had !

However, the weight is back on due to my not continuing to prioritise it but I know this has to change.

I know myself well enough to realise I need some external support and "peer pressure" to help me stay focused and to keep me on track - hence the reason for a challenge lasting 18 months until December 2010, starting on June 9th 2009, the date that would have been my Dad's 65th birthday.

I plan not only to do a "sponsored slim" but also do other activities related to the two charities I've decided to support, Diabetes UK and the British Kidney Patients Association, which also will hopefully help me lose the weight. I know sponsoring someone to lose weight is uncertain so these other events should be achievements in themselves to justify your generosity !

I have a 2nd Just Giving Site for Diabetes UK http://www.justgiving.com/timtarby-donalddiabetesuk

I will update the events as I plan them.

Now the brave bit admitting this - my weight as of Monday 8th June was 24 Stone 9 pounds (156.3kg) and my goal is to lose at least 5 stones or 70 pounds (31.8kg) by the end of 2010. I will update my progress on this site and via my Twitter site http://twitter.com/TimTD and via a blog (still to be launched).

Although I'd managed to lose 13 lbs by the end of June, July and August were difficult due to the Street Party and 3 weeks in France and I've put 2lbs back on so I'm now at 11lbs lost (5kgs) and have kick-started my efforts for September onwards - I need to lose 1lb per week until the end of 2010 to meet my goal so I'm going for it. Next event is a 4 mile work over Clent for Diabetes UK, sponsorships welcome !!

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: The BKPA gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

So please sponsor me now - and if you see me please keep encouraging me to focus on the weight !! Thanks, Tim
