Story

The King’s School is a local authority funded Grammar School for boys located in Grantham, which is in South Kesteven, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom. The School building is situated within a conservation area.

The original Grade I listed Free Grammar School of King Edward VI, founded in 1528, remains essentially unchanged. This building is not only part of Grantham’s heritage, but that of the United Kingdom.

This Grade I listed building, roofed in Collyweston slate, is steeped in history.  As custodians we need to preserve this piece of history and protect its contents, keeping in mind that it is used on a daily basis as part of school life as a Library, whilst also being an international attraction for many historians, mathematicians and scientists. Importantly, some of our former students went onto greater things; Sir Isaac Newton attended the school from 1655 to 1660, and William Cecil, later Lord Burghley, treasurer and adviser to Elizabeth I, was a pupil in 1530, to name just two.

As a Grade I listed building, the Collyweston roof now needs to be completely re-roofed, as established by Conservation Architects, and English Heritage have confirmed the Library building is to be put on the Buildings at Risk register.

In layman’s terms some issues are; some sagging of the eaves and a dip in the roof. Some slates are twisted, others loose and have had to be removed as a precaution.  A bespoke tile catcher has also had to be fitted at a cost of some £8,000 as there was a real danger to both pedestrians and within the School grounds.  The iconic garden surrounding the Old School building has had to be cordoned off. Two stone moldings are also damaged and are in need of repair.

It is estimated that circa 70% of the original tiles could still be used, however the cost of re-roofing this historic building, is still estimated to be £320,000 - £350,000 and the School needs to raise the funds to meet this vital piece of work.
