The RAF Benevolent Fund is the RAF's leading welfare charity. We have been there for all members of the RAF Family for over 100 years. Last year we assisted more than 70,000 members of the RAF Family. Support us in 2024 and help us reach even more members of the RAF Family.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Born and raised in Wales (Albert) Bert went to London as an apprentice to Sainsbury’s before service in the RAF from 1953. After square bashing and basic training he became an air radar technician and was posted to RAF Colerne in Wiltshire. Promoted to Senior Aircraftsman he maintained and serviced radar equipment on aircraft as varied as the Brigand, Balliol the Meteor and the Avro Anson. Despite being encouraged to stay in the RAF in 1955 he returned to the grocery trade that he knew so well.  After working for Dairy Produce Packers he moved to Express Dairies where he became a Purchasing Manager with responsibilities for dairy products , product packaging, Energy and contract services.  In 1956 Bert married June Feltham and later moved to Buckinghamshire where they raised their family of two sons who in due course married and made Bert and June proud grandparents. In 1992 Bert and June retired to Gillingham where they were very happy together. In 2004 Bert was diagnosed with a muscle wasting disease and then 2006 he tragically lost his beloved June to Cancer. Then in 2008 he was left severely disabled by a stroke, being paralysed down the whole of one side of his body.  However always one to face challenges Bert was determined to stay in his home and with the help of many wonderful carers he is still there. He is an active member of the Blackmore Stroke Club committee and welcomes school children and their teachers into his home to learn about living with disability. Bert has received vital support from the RAF Association without whom his life would be much harder than it already is. Over the years the RAF Benevolent Fund have supplied him with complex powered wheelchairs, mobility aids in the house and contributions to the cost of his care package. He uses a MOTOmed exercise machine which provides him with essential exercise to stay fit. Bert is at his happiest when he is helping other people which he does on a daily basis, as a result he has many friends across Gillingham and beyond. Recently he raised funds on his MOTOmed for the NHS and the Stroke Club. He is now planning to attempt a cyclotron of 10 miles in order to raise money for the RAF Association who have been so generous in providing him with vital support to maintain his independence for many years. The 10 miles will be a huge challenge for him but he is determined to complete them for the RAF Benevolent Fund. To help Bert with this personal Challenge, donations to the RAF Benevolent Fund via a JustGiving page would be much appreciated; https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/tedrogersBertrogers
