This fantastic team page means collectively our target goal of £25,000 includes everyones efforts automatically!

So, let's tell you more about our wonderful charity!

The retinal Children's Fund

The Harley Street Eye Clinic’s director, Mr Ahmed El-Amir, founded the Retinal Children’s Fund charity in 2013 whilst treating children at Heatherwood & Wexham Park Hospital (Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust). A Retcam machine is sorely needed by the hospital's special care baby unit and so The Retinal Children's Fund was born!

We are fundraising to raise £25,000 to buy this Retcam machine! An incredible piece of technology; a wide view digital imaging system which enables brilliant full colour, highly detailed images of the back of the eye to be captured. These images can then be sent for immediate analysis to a consultant ophthalmologist.

The Retcam has a lots of uses, but primarily would be used to detect and monitor eye disease in premature babies. In particular, Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP).

This disease occur's in some babies after a premature birth.

Inside the babies eyes, the blood vessels of the retina start to grow abnormally. This can be a very fast developing disease and requires very frequent monitoring. It is important to treat ROP at 'just the right moment' for best chances of successful outcomes.

The Retcam would provide a fantastic opportunity for more flexible monitoring schedules - the babies can be scanned in situ, remaining in the special care unit and scanned by trained staff and the images sent for analysis by the consultant ophthalmologist. This makes finding 'just the right moment' much easier!

ROP is the single leading cause of childhood blindness, but the Retcam can also be used to detect other childhood eye diseases such as cancer.

In addition to his private practice in Harley Street Mr Ahmed El-Amir continues his great work with the NHS, specialising in retinal disorders in babies, children and adults that require complex long term care.

Embracing technological advances allows us to continue leading the way in modern ophthalmology.

Mr Ahmed El-Amir was the first surgeon in Europe to implant a tiny Centrasight (TM) telescope into a patient with advanced AMD (Age Related Macular Degeneration). Restoring some central vision and a huge improvement in the quality of life for the patient!

He has pioneered a technique for again using the miniature telescope, but into the eyes of advanced AMD patients who have had previous eye surgery. We are very proud to be the only clinic in the world to offer this surgery.

We are genuinely 'On a mission to help more people see’.

We thank you very much for donating on any of our team pages!
