The Defence Helicopter Flying School (DHFS) is based at Royal Air Force Shawbury in Shropshire. It is an independent ‘lodger’ unit within the station and its main task is to provide helicopter flying training for the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force and some overseas countries. The school consists of three main Squadrons based at Shawbury; 705 Naval Air Squadron and 660 Sqn Army Air Corps run parallel to each other providing basic single-engine rotary training on the Squirrel; 60 (R) Squadron is responsible for advanced multi-engine rotary training on the larger Griffin aircraft, and a Search and Rescue Training Unit located at RAF Valley in Wales. The School also operates Augusta Westland 109 and 139 aircraft.
The school caters for up to 200 tri-service students at any one time all of whom are encouraged to remain fit through various sporting activities. The school places strong emphasis on helping the community and raising money for a wealth of charities; the main charity for 2011-12 being The Royal British Legion. Over the past year, DHFS students and staff have raised in excess of (£TBC) through charity bike rides, mountain walks, cricket tournaments, golf tournaments, raffles and moustache competitions. DHFS is committed to fundraising and has set a target figure of £20,000 this year and we need to your help to do it.
