We are raising money to make our elderly care wards more 'Dementia Friendly'. We want to make a hospital admission for patients with memory problems as minimally distressing as possible.
It is estimated there are 670,000 people in England with dementia, with the numbers expected to double in the next 30 years. 42% of individuals over the age of 70 with unplanned admissions to hospital have dementia, rising to 48% in those aged over 80. We also know that people with dementia stay longer in hospital than those without.
With money raised we want to buy clear orientation boards telling them the date, time and where they are. If we reach our target we then would like to use the money to provide activites on the wards to reduce aggitation. We are also looking at changes to the decor to be pleasant and calming while making it clear where to find important destinations like the toilet.
