On the 12th August 2017 our family's whole world was flipped upside down. My husband, our girl's Dad, Alastair, had been involved in a serious road bike accident in the Lake District. The Great North Air Ambulance Service were on the scene quickly and were utterly amazing, they flew him to Royal Preston Hospital in an induced coma. We were since told that if it was not for the care Alastair received at the scene of the incident we would not have him here with us today.
Alastair, was in a coma for almost 2 weeks on the Intensive Care Unit in Preston Hospital. He then spent 5 weeks on an neuro-surgical ward. The accident left him with a broken jaw, open wounds on his limbs and life threatening bleeding in and around the brain, a subdural hematoma.
We stayed in Preston for 7 weeks anticipating Alastair's recovery when we finally got the news he would be heading closer to home- transferred to Ward 26, neuro-rehabilitation ward in James Cook Hospital, Middlesborough. This ward was simply the best thing to happen to Alastair. Every nurse, doctor, healthcare assistant, occupational therapist and physio therapist helped him down his long and difficult path to recovery, and for that we will always be thankful.
The Headway Fund helped me and my family, especially myself, greatly after the accident. They were always there to answer any questions we had about Alastair's recovery process and have been so supportive when it came to me having to take on the role of being Alastair's carer. Aswell as raising money for GNAAS and Headway, we would also like to donate some money to Ward 26 in James Cook Hospital as the support they gave Alastair was incredible- if you wish to donate money to the ward we would only be able to accept cash donations so message any one of us privately if you wish to donate this way.
I wish we could put into words what these past few months have been like for us all, but that is impossible. We have always known how strong Alastair is, but his strength after this accident has really blown us away. He has knocked down every obstacle that has been in his way, and he still continues to do so.
This is why we have decided to take on a number of challenges to raise money for the fantastic charities. GNAAS, Headway and Ward 26 truly deserve every single penny you donate.
Our first challenge will be The Great North Swim on the 9th Junw. My sister Jayne and friends Jo and Judy and my daughter’s friend's Chloe B, Christina and Chloe C will be swimming alongside Ailsa and I.
We are also completing the 3 peaks! Also planning on running the Yorkshire Marathon and competing in a 13 mile Tough Mudder run in aid of these charities too- we will add donation pages for those to our page in due course.
Thank you all so much for your continued support, it means the world to us all.
