Cycling 4 days, 4 countries and (nearly) 400 miles...
Our team is joining Beyond the Bike for their warm up ride, cycling more than 500km from London to Amsterdam.
Stuart and Claire will be cycling more than 10,000km through Southern Africa and Asia raising money for Beyond Ourselves in Zambia and United World Schools in Asia. (Visit www.beyondthebike.org for more details about Stuart, Claire and their challenge).
Beyond the Bike is also an exciting educational project; following the route of natural resources from African mine to Asian factory, connecting classrooms and sharing resources worldwide. Using smartphones to record the journey they will be partnered with Fairphone, a mobile phone company that puts social values first, based in Amsterdam. From here they will fly to Uganda to start their big adventure.
Beyond Ourselves partners with three Community Primary Schools (from Nursery up to Grade 7) in the Copperbelt Province in Zambia. Each year 10 students from the graduating Grade 7 classes at all three schools are selected to receive a bursary fund which enables them to continue their education into Grade 8 and beyond. These students are academically able but their families lack the finance to continue investing in their education. Currently, only 2 in 19 children in Zambia who start Primary School complete High School. To have the opportunity to attend and complete High School is life changing. This year we have our first students entering into Grade 11. To enable one student to continue in High School for one year costs just £92, that's £460 to complete Grades 8-12.
