In regards to the charity we have chosen:
“Ehlers Danlos syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum disorder (EDS +HSD) are groups of inherited disorders that affect your connective tissue. EDS and HSD are life threatening disorders that affects the way your body produces collagen. Collagen is often called the the "chewing gum that sticks everything together" as it holds your body in one piece, from stopping joints from dislocating to stopping ligament damage- it can also affect the way your stomach and heart function. EDS and HSD are genetic however, most people never know they have it until someone else in the family is diagnosed. Many people will try to live a normal life thinking there are ‘a bit fragile and prone to being ill’ however, some can end up disabled, in wheelchairs, using crutches, require tube feeding and frequently be in hospital.
The average time to diagnosis is 10 years,
which means that many people struggle with their symptoms without the correct
care and advice. Without help, support, and access to treatment, EDS +HSD
can have a significant impact on people’s lives, and in some forms it is
life-limiting. Those affected by EDS + HSD face challenges to their physical
and mental health, both of which can deteriorate rapidly without appropriate
diagnosis, support, and treatment. EDS +HSD can force those with the condition
into poverty by its impact on their lives, especially if their ability to pay
for the help and support they need is limited.
EDS + HSD are often described as ‘invisible illnesses’,
many people will comment how people with EDS + HSD look healthy. Receiving
comments of, "you don’t look ill" or “its in your head” can be
debilitating to those with the illness, and many live in severe pain every
second of the day.
