Story
Ever since the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, millions of Afghan citizens have been forced to continuously flee from conflict. In 2021 alone, Pakistan, Iraq and Uzbekistan have accommodated an influx of 540,000 refugees fleeing from the Taliban regime.
Unfortunately, only a fraction of those who flee to Uzbekistan are recognised as refugees and are legally admitted. The Red Cross Fund delivers aid to refugees making the arduous journey, as well as assisting in their resettlement.
To support the Red Cross's noble efforts, and in order to gain some insight into the difficulty these refugees endure, 25 year 8 Westminster Under School boys, along with 10 staff members will embark on a challenging week of activity.
From Monday the 29th of November to Friday 3rd December, we are aiming to collectively run the equivalent of the 575 kilometre migrant route between Kabul and the Afghanistan-Uzbekistan Friendship Bridge. This will require each of us to complete 5 laps of Vincent Square (or the equivalent in physical activity) every lunchtime.
Please sponsor committed members of the WUS community via this page. All proceeds raised will go directly to the Red Cross Afghan Refugee Appeal.
Thank you all very much.
