The Lilongwe Institute of Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery (LION) is an autonomous not-for-profit institution in Malawi where BSSH and BAHT aim to work with and train local surgeons, trainees and therapists to deliver and educate in patient care.

Story

Wrightington Hospital's status as a Centre of Excellence in the treatment of musculo-skeletal disease has its origins in the seminal work of Professor Sir John Charnley, who pioneered hip replacement surgery involving the techniques of low-friction arthroplasty and also innovative advances to counter post-operative infection.

Wrightington's reputation for excellence attracts highly talented Consultants who specialise in joint surgery, and in the medical disciplines of rheumatology and rehabilitation. This multi-disciplinary approach produces important synergies.

The current TIG hand and wrist fellow at the Wrightington Upper Limb Unit spend three month working with the LION Unit project in Malawi.

We are supporting the BSSH effort for the LION project and our colleagues in Malawi in progressing hand and upper limb care.
