Dementia is a syndrome associated with an ongoing decline of brain functioning. The most common type of dementia in the UK is Alzheimer's disease which is a progressive disease, meaning the symptoms develop gradually over many years and eventually become more severe. The disease is a life-limiting illness which attacks the brain, making it hard for people with the disease to perform day to day tasks - it is common for people with Alzheimer's disease to eventually even have difficulty eating and swallowing.

Each one of us in the team has been affected by dementia with someone in most of our families having been diagnosed, and in some cases lost, to the disease. It is most common in people over the age of 65, however around 1 in every 20 cases of Alzheimer's disease affects people aged 40 to 65.

The biggest connection that we all have to the disease is Gill, Charlie's mum. In 2016 Gill was diagnosed with early onset dementia in the form of Alzheimer's disease aged just 56. Since Gill's diagnosis her cognitive ability deteriorated significantly in a short time and in the later stages of the disease she had to have around the clock live in carers and was unable to communicate even her most basic needs with her family and her carers. Heartbreakingly Gill passed away in April 2021 due to this horrible disease.

We want to raise money to help the charity to continue to research the cause, cure, care and prevention of this disease so that others won't have to go through the same thing that Gill and so many other have.
