Story
Hello. Thanks for visiting ourJust Giving page. I’m really glad you found us!
As you can see Adrian and I are hoping to raise lots of money for Children with Cancer UK. We have a very personal reason for doing so, so please do read on to find out our motivation, and why this charity is so close to our hearts.
In 2008 my son Jacob, was diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma, a very rare and aggressive form of childhood Cancer. At the time of diagnosis we were told that there was a strong chance that Jacob would not survive. As a result of the devastating news we received we agreed to allow Jacob to take part in two clinical trials to determine which chemotherapy drugs where more effective in treating his disease.
His treatment lasted 15 months and included intensive chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, high dose chemotherapy, a stem cell transplant, followed by six months oral chemotherapy.
Over a decade on Jacob is fit, healthy and enjoying life to the full, he will celebrate his 18th birthday next year. This is something my husband and I will be forever grateful to the medical professionals who treated Jacob for. During his his last checkup his oncology consultant commented “you are a rare example of what happens when medical science and research goes to plan”.
The last decade has not been without complications. The high risk, high dose treatment that Jacob received has understandably left him with a number of health conditions, however, we remain confident that as the years go by, medical science and research will once again overcome these problems, and we are hopeful that he will be able to live his adult life to the full, in whatever way he chooses.
Children with Cancer Uk actively raise and invest money to fund specialist research to improve our understanding of childhood cancer. Their research helps to develop kinder more effective treatments with fewer toxic side effects. Survivors can face a lifetime of serious health issues as a result of the intensive treatments used to treat their disease, and Children with Cancer UK are one of only a few charities that are actively funding research in to ways to improve the late effects suffered by Cancer survivors.
This October myself and my good friend Adrian Parker have been given the chance to run the 2022 Virgin London Marathon in support of Children with Cancer UK. Our families have been close friends since our children were just toddlers. Both Adrian and his wife Nina supported us through some of the toughest times we have ever faced as a family, so it is wonderful to be able to share this incredible opportunity with them both.
Our run in London will not only honour Jacobs success story, but also those of our close family members and friends who have also been affected by Cancer.
Medical research remains crucial to raise awareness and help find a cure, so that one day, young or old, no family has the injustice and heartache of watching someone they love go through cancer.
Thank you for reading... and if you are kind enough to leave a donation, thank you for your generosity and support.
