Story
We're all here because we watched a TV programme about the amazing Anne Lister that then led us to the Shibden After Dark group that led some of them to want to emulate Anne's trek up Vignemale, that then brought us to form our own walking group.
We didn't want Anne's wife to be forgotten, and she had the perfect name so we dubbed ourselves Walker Wednesday. The aim of the group isn't to circumnavigate the globe, it was born out of a wish to motivate us to get out and about more than you normally would, even if it's just one extra step.
Suranne Jones, who portrays Anne Lister so beautifully, is an ambassador for The Alzheimer's Society so a challenge that gets our steps in and helps support something close to her heart seemed an ideal way to show her and thank her for all she and the show have given us. There are an estimated 850,000 people in the UK with dementia, so we are aiming to walk 850,000 steps in a three month period.
Walking has been away for so many of us to find some peace and the support of the Walker Wednesday group has given us all so much more than just some steps on our trackers. The past few months have been tough for everyone but coronavirus has hit people affected by dementia the hardest and continues to disrupt lives.
So that's why we're taking on Step Up for Dementia. Please donate to support us and ensure Alzheimer's Society can be there for the people who need them most.
