For at least 1.9 million children in the UK, learning to talk and understand words feels like an impossible hurdle. Your support can help give children and young people the skills they need so they aren't left behind, waiting to be understood.

Story

1.4 million children in the U.K. have long-term speech, language and communication needs and around 6 million people use an alternative form of communication to speech such as sign language or a voice output communication aid.

Here at the UEA Speech and Language Therapy Society, we’re asking as many people as possible to support the children’s communication charity iCAN by taking on our UEA Communication Challenge and donating just a few pounds.

The challenge is simple. Video yourself communicating the message “I can communicate without using my voice” without using your voice and then nominate 5 friends to take on the challenge themselves. You can be as creative as you like. You could write the message, type the message or even draw the message!

Just because somebody doesn’t use speech, doesn’t mean they can’t communicate. Let’s raise awareness for alternative forms of communication! Good luck!

About the charity

At least 1.9 million children in the UK are struggling to talk and understand words.  We give children and young people the skills they need so they aren't left behind. We do this by creating tools for schools and nurseries, giving advice and guidance to families and putting pressure on politicians.
