Story
JAMES & DEXTERS TWO-MOORS-WAY
We are looking to take on a 6-day walking challenge to raise money for our two chosen charities.
ABOUT THE CHARITIES
James’ Charity - Hospiscare.
Hospiscare, our local adult hospice charity, offers compassionate end-of-life care to individuals with terminal illnesses, providing comfort and support to patients and their families during their most challenging moments. Their dedicated team of doctors and nurses work tirelessly to ensure dignity and quality of life for all.
Dexters Charity - Children's Hospice South West.
They offer care for children who are not expected to survive into adulthood, providing essential support for the entire family. The care they provide encompasses a wide range, including respite, emergency, palliative, and end-of-life care. From diagnosis through to bereavement and beyond, they are there for as long as the family needs their support.
ABOUT THE EVENT
As keen hikers and wild campers, the 117-mile Two Moors Way has always appealed to us. For those of you unfamiliar with the route – it’s a Devon Coast to Coast Walk, from Wembury in South Devon to Lynmouth in North Devon, via some of Britain’s most bleak terrain.
We aim to complete the challenge in 6 days from Saturday 18 May - Thursday 23 May 2024, with (hopefully!) one or two more of our good friends, if we can get them to commit in time…. isn’t that right, Mr. Gould!! Navigating our way through the mostly barren landscape using good old-fashioned map & compass.
We will be carrying all our own kit – food, water, spare clothing, tent, sleeping bag etc, in a large bergen and sleeping outside in a simple 1-man tent or bivi bag (not decided how rough we fancy doing it yet!). We may have to plan a route that passes a different pub for each of the 5 nights, to ensure we are adequately fuelled with a warm meal and a cold beverage of choice in our tummies. Don’t ask us about hygiene, we haven’t planned how we might tackle that yet – early morning cold water plunges in the Dart, I imagine!
The guidebooks state that the walk is 117 miles, not allowing for any corrections (getting lost!) along the way - passing through the National Parks of Exmoor and Dartmoor, as well as crossing Devon's two major arterial roads - the A30 and the A38.
Friends, family, in fact, any of you lot who are taking time out to read our waffle can come along and join us for a section, or just park up and meet us in the evenings at one of those pubs, to bring us our packed lunch for the following day!
If you made it this far, thank you for reading and please donate generously to make sure we have no wiggle room to make any excuses!!
