Story
I am planning to drag myself through a few painful jogs in order to raise some cash for two very worthy causes. Partly to fund the incredible work they do and partly to feel like I’m doing something useful, in circumstances where you can often feel anything but.
I am raising money for:
1. Dementia UK – my Mum was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's last year and in short, it is tough. The speed and extent of the change and impact on every aspect of life will surprise even the most prepared. The need for advice, education and support is stark and Dementia UK provide all three with ample respect and care; and
2. PAPYRUS – it is utterly tragic that suicide is the biggest killer of people under the age of 35. PAPYRUS is dedicated to the prevention of suicide and promotion of positive mental health in young people. I’ll be raising money in honour of my mate Chris, one of the kindest blokes I’ve ever met. I’m still learning to accept that you never really come to terms with impossibly difficult news – if the funds raised can enable PAPYRUS to help someone find a different solution, that would be pretty special.
To encourage you to donate, I’ll be taking part in the following runs:
1. Royal Parks Half Marathon, London – 13 October 2024;
2. Ultra X Morocco – 50km – 17 November 2024; and
3. Ultra X Rwanda – 110km – 25-26 January 2025.
(for context, a marathon is 42km)
I can promise you that this will be a challenge. I do not enjoy running – it’s painful, it’s boring and contrary to what the ‘Insta-runners’ tell you, being alone with my thoughts is not a refreshing experience – suffice to say I won’t be “catching the running bug”.
Please do give what you can and please feel free to wait until run no.3 to do so – we’ll all be surprised if I get there!
