Story
Tom and Hayley will be running the London half marathon in April to raise money for Alzheimers. Please read below for why they have chosen this charity. Any donation is appreciated.
In April 2023, Hayley and Tom both lost Grandparents due to Alzheimers. They have chosen to run the London Landmarks Half Marathon in honour of them. They would like to raise as much money as possible for a charity which helps the research for treatment and care of this disease.
In July 2017, Tom’s Grandad, Bill Goodland suffered a stroke whilst on holiday. 2 months after getting him home, he was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia. He sadly passed away in April 2023. Bill was a great character, you would often find him laughing, singing or getting stuck into a fish and chips, usually followed by a ‘lovely jubbly’. Bill was a massive Tottenham Hotspur Fan. In 2009, three generations of Goodland’s managed to get season tickets in the North Stand, Tom would go with his Dad - Gary, and his Grandad Bill.
Hayley lost her Nanny Rene who was diagnosed in 2016 with Alzheimer's and had vascular dementia. Nanny Rene was a big character in a small body, she made everyone laugh constantly and wasn’t scared to share her opinion on anything. Even up until her last few days fighting, she remembered all of her family’s names when visiting. She didn’t forget her love for a fish fillet from McDonald’s or her love for Elvis either.
1 in 6 people over the age of 80 will suffer from Alzheimer’s. The suffering from Alzheimer’s is felt not only by the diagnosed, but also from close family and friends as well.
Both Nanny Rene and Grandad Bill are greatly missed everyday, we hope to make them proud!
