Redeeming Our Communities - a community engagement charity focused on bringing lasting transformation to people's lives

Cancer Research - empowering patients, supporting families, and developing research to beat cancer

BACKGROUND

All three of the competitors are being trained by an experienced personal trainer, Neil Salanki, who is a sports and nutrition expert, college lecturer and specialist in long distance event training.

They are all good friends together (both John and Dan are currently studying at UCLAN in Preston to become Occupational Therapists), but there is going to be some serious competition on the day too! Who knows, will they all achieve the same distance individually again and stop at the same time? Or will one break away from the pack...?? They intend to firstly break their own record of 22.1 miles, but this time to push for 30+ miles.

STORIES

For John, both ROC and Cancer Research have been big parts of his life. While only 16, John was diagnosed with Leukaemia and had to undergo 3 years of life saving chemotherapy. John is a true champion in every sense of the word, and he wants to give back to those who helped save his life many years ago by doing something heroic with the gift of life he has been given.

For Dan, he lost his sister only a few years ago to cancer, and he has felt the pain of loss that cancer so easily deals to families with little warning. Dan wants to stand proud for his family and honour the memory of his sister by going the extra mile for Cancer Research and protect more families from what he has had to face himself.

For James, he is passionate about the community, in helping people find employment and in transforming overgrown gardens; exactly what ROC Garden is all about! This project has the classic start up story. James hopes to see the impact of the world record to create new opportunities to support, inspire and resource this growing team of volunteers that transform gardens to transform lives. James is also a Reverend of the Free Methodist Church (a Pastor), where he also gives his time to care pastorally and support members of the congregation at Light and Life Church in Thornton, near Blackpool. The church have been a big support, and they know that James isn't your average Pastor!
