Story
Father of four, Samed suffers from severe scoliosis, which means he can’t work. He and his wife were forced to send their children out begging. They had no choice if they were to stay alive. Then local Tearfund partner began supporting Samed’s family with regular supplies of flour, beans, sugar and salt. Samed says ‘I thank God that our children no longer have to beg’.
There are currently 24 million people like Samed still in need of humanitarian aid in Yemen. 2020 not only marks 5 years of conflict in Yemen but poses an even greater challenge in light of coronavirus. This conflict has made the healthcare system unable to deal with a pandemic as it is thought only half of Yemen’s medical centres are fully functioning.
Tearfund works in the world’s 50 poorest countries such as Yemen distributing humanitarian aid and empowering communities to escape the cyclical nature of poverty. Therefore we as a group of young people are coming together to do the 24 challenge to support Tearfund’s work with some of 24 million people needing humanitarian assistance. Whether that is running 24k, or cooking eggs in 24 different ways, from the 24th-31st July we will be raising funds for Tearfund and its work in Yemen.
