Story
Thank you for visiting our Just Giving page.
We are taking part in the, ' I love the 90's' virtual run to mark the 30th anniversary of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. We chose this event as June marks the 8th anniversary of losing the most beautiful soul, Rena McGuigan. She was 57 when she passed of a lung cancer that had metastasized in the brain. Due to her being a non-smoker her diagnosis was missed various times by various health professional. It is an often missed cancer and is underfunded.
Because of support from events like the virtual run, over the past 30 years the Roy castle charity has been able to:
Fund over £30 million in lung cancer research
Lay the groundwork for lung cancer screening
Fund the first ever lung cancer nurse specialist
Perform the first ever lung cancer keyhole surgery
Instigate and implement the ban on smoking in public places and smoking in cars
Helped thousands of people to stop smoking
Funded and built the first lung cancer research centre in the UK
Campaigned for life-lengthening treatments
Raised awareness of lung cancer, challenged the misconceptions around the disease and improved attitudes
Provided emotional, practical and financial support for thousands and thousands of people diagnosed and living with lung cancer.
But there is so much more to be done.
We lost our amazing mum too soon. She was robbed of spending time with her grandchildren. Let's continue to raise money in her name, so that others don't have to suffer the same loss.
Team Rena 2020 are taking part in events including a 10k, half marathon and marathon distance broken down over the month. We are each challenging ourselves in different ways.
