Mustardseed Arts and Educational Trust is building a school in Sentema, Uganda. Our mission is to provide an inspirational and practical education to the young children in our care, many of whom will be vulnerable or impoverished.

Story

This academic year (2021-22), MCS continues to support its partner school, Mustardseed Junior School, a sustainable, inspirational school in Sentema, Uganda. Every pound we raise (up to £40,000) is doubled thanks to Sir Vernon Ellis OW's generous matching pledge.

In addition to online fundraising, we have been raising money at school events and have even produced our own MCS-MJS cookbook with all profits going to Mustardseed Junior School (available to buy at Reception).

The school is now open!

Finally, after two years of school closures in Uganda, Mustardseed Junior School has opened! The MCS community has been involved since its inception, and have watched with joy and interest while the school itself was built. It is wonderful to see its doors (and the Waynflete playing field we funded) now open, full of children ready to learn and play in this new, pioneering educational space. Have a look at the photos here to see what pupils have been doing since schools opened in January 2022, and the brand-new video from this June here.

The money we raise will go primarily towards bursaries to allow local children to access the school. It costs £366 to fund one pupil's education for a year – just a pound a day – so all money raised really does go a long way.

How it all started:

Mustardseed School was conceived by two friends: Kenneth Buwule, a Ugandan school teacher, book editor and post graduate scholar of peace and conflict resolution, and John Caird, a British writer and theatre director of plays, musicals and opera whose work has been performed all round the world. Kenneth and John share a deep sense of care for the health of the world in ecological and educational terms. They want to inspire a new generation of young people with the knowledge, the will and the self-confidence to make their world a better, greener and more peaceful place. Mustardseed School will diligently prepare young children with the requisite academic and practical skills to pursue their ambitions into their secondary education and beyond.
