Story

Andy and I will be running the Derby Half Marathon on 19th June for Crohn’s and Colitis UK.

For those that don’t know, Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis (UC) are the two main forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). They are chronic illnesses with no cure, which come with periods of good health (remission) as well as times where symptoms are more active (flare ups).

I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis when I was 18, having never heard of the disease before. I have been on medication since my diagnosis to try and stay in remission, but I’ve still had plenty of flare ups over the years (my most recent lasting about 9 months!). Although sometimes I feel like it consumes me, overall I live a relatively normal life which I am very grateful for.

Unfortunately for many with IBD, treatments and medication do not work and often surgery is required. Roughly 30% of people with UC and up to 75% of people with Crohn’s will eventually require life changing surgery.

Crohn’s and Colitis UK are a brilliant charity who offer support and advice to those living with IBD. They raise awareness, fund research into new treatments and hopefully one day they will find a cure.

Any donations will be hugely appreciated - and will more than make up for the pain of running a half marathon!
