Story
Goal: £10k for 10 charities in £10 months
We are taking on a new family challenge to raise awareness & funds for charities close to our hearts & those we love. We hope to inspire others to help, donate & connect with these amazing charities & the people they support.
UPDATE: Total amount raised (online and offline) = £12,317!!! (including gift aid and matched funding paid directly to charities.) Thank you to all our supporters.
Here are some of the things we got up to:-
For our first fundraiser, we held a plant sale for the local school PTA from plants we grew from seed and propagation, raising a total of £700. The "seeds" for this wider challenge were sown from the success of this sale. The PTA used the fund to buy much needed equipment for the classrooms, learning materials for the school and organises fun events that the children would otherwise miss out on. We also organised stalls at their school fairs to raise money.
Our second charity was Samaritans. As a previous Samaritan volunteer I know how important their work is to support those who feel they have no-one else to talk to. We took part in a Samarathon (walking 26.2 miles as a family) in July to raise much needed funds for this cause.
Our third charity was RNIB Talking Books - like us, my Mum was an avid reader but sadly suffered from a rare form of dementia (Posterior Cortical Atrophy) which affected her ability to read (her eyesight was unaffected but her brain could no longer process writing) so she relied on audio books. We raised £1,500 to produce a new children's talking book and give those who need it access to the wonderful world of books, via book sales and readathons.
Our forth charity is Tia Greyhound rescue - we will be organising Dog First Aid courses and raffles/auctions of all things dog related to raise money for this charity which supports abandoned, mistreated and unwanted greyhounds.
Our fifth charity was World Land Trust - we are passionate about saving the world's rainforests and are delighted to add WLT, advocated by David Attenborough, to our list. We held cookalongs to raise money for this charity thanks to amazing support from Ian at https://foodfrom4.com
Our sixth charity was RSPB as chosen by Grandma and Grandad who are huge fans of birds, wildlife and UK conservation. We held painting parties and sold hand painted cards, created by Barbara Hems.
Our seventh charity was Babies in Buscot Support, the Baby Special Care Unit at Royal Berks, in honour of a close family friend. We are delighted to support this charity which saves so many babies lives. We held a Halloween Spooktacular Event and raised over £1k for this great charity.
Our eighth charity was ASD family help who provide much needed support, advice and activities for those with autism and other learning difficulties. This charity was also nominated by a close family friend. We sourced a sponsored bungee jump for members of this charity to raise funds.
Our ninth charity was Macmillan Cancer Support, a vital charity providing reassurance, guidance and support to those diagnosed with cancer. This charity has supported our friends and family through their cancer journeys so we know just how amazing they are. We held a number of stalls at local fairs and organised a Diwali event to raise money for this cause.
Our tenth charity was Wokingham in Need - we helped raise money for the community via auctions and helping at a number of their events.
We also had a number of online auctions and lots of other events during the 10 months. We had so much fun together, loved inspiring our friends and family, and were proud to have helped these amazing charities in some small way.
