Story
Four secondary school mates, looking for adventure, stumbled across the English channel...one thing led to another, and here we were!
We will attempt to cross 21 miles of the world's busiest shipping channel, with large waves, water temperatures most would grimace at and, oh yeah, half of it is at night!! We are doing this (of course for a good pub story, but also) to raise awareness and hopefully a fair amount of money to help the amazing Blue Marine Foundation.
We all agreed that we wanted to do something to help our beloved, but all too often 'out-of-sight-out-of-mind' ocean. Yes, we all love going on holiday there, but many don't realize that the ocean is the biggest carbon sink we have and so a key defense in fight against climate change. The delicate balance that is being destroyed daily by mass overfishing, is also what sustains billions (with a B) of people every day.
With 90% of large fish stocks already gone, and many species either extinct or on the brink of extinction it's kind of shocking this isn't bigger news. Lots of amazing resources on BLUE's website, or if you want to learn about the overall system watch the now infamous Seaspiracy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Q5CXN7soQg
There are many ocean causes, but the reason we picked BLUE is because they aim to address the main cause: industrial scale, unsustainable fishing practices, by protecting the ocean. Initiatives in South Africa and South America have proved that ocean ecosystems can recover fast if they are given the chance. BLUE's strategy is clear and smart:
Protect 30% of the oceans by 2030 (currently we're at around 0.5%, but awareness is growing fast).
Please give what you can for a truly world-changing cause.
