Story

‘Beatson Cancer Charity exists to enhance the lives of patients living with cancer across the west of Scotland.

We rely on voluntary donations to allow us to invest in services, staff, research, and education to provide a better future for those affected by cancer. We aim to make the journey easier by transforming the way patients are cared for and the way treatment is funded.

Whether it is in the hospital ward, or within the community, we believe no one in Scotland should experience cancer without care, without love and without hope.

Let's make this year's Off The Beatson Track the biggest and brightest yet.

Thank you for being with us’

Team Allan is taking part in Off The Beatson Track again this year, and we are hoping to raise lots of money to support the work of the Beatson Cancer Charity. Having benfitted from and experienced the tremendous service that the hospital and its staff provides, we want to thank them for looking after our husband, daddy and friend, Russell so well. We also want to thank them for always looking for further treatment options, for fighting for his life and providing such care to his family and friends when ultimately his life was lost.

Russell lost his two year battle with oesophageal cancer, brain metastases, and leptomeningeal disease on the 28th December 2021. He never stopped fighting, he never gave in to melancholy and he stayed with us as long as he could but ultimately the disease was too strong. Oesophageal Cancer is diagnosed in around 9000 people per year in the uk. It is more common in men than in women and is rarely found in adults under the age of 40, Russell was 41! The early warning signs pre diagnosis were unintentional weight loss, the sensation of food getting stuck in his throat and chronic acid reflux. Oesophageal cancer rarely metastasises to the brain and and even less frequently attacks the meninges, but unfortunately for us, all the unlikely scenarios conspired against and Russell suffered it all.

We are taking part in Off The Beatson Track to remember Russell and the superstar that he was, to raise funds so that others in a similar situation will receive the same diligent care that he did and to raise awareness of this lesser known cancer in the hope that it might save a life. So please, if you can spare it, please give a little in support of this amazing charity and the work that they do. 💛
