Story
As many of you will know the most special little guy entered into our lives almost 5 years ago. Odhrán was born with Autism, alongside this is diagnosed as non-verbal with a Significant Learning Disability.
My world has been turned upside down in the most amazing way. Odhrán has made my family and I see the world in a different way and I am so blessed for this. However, our society is now where near inclusive enough for my little guy and others similar to him.
Odhrán’s day to day life is hard but this is made even more difficult by a world in which he has to “adapt and fit in” rather than the other way round. Every smell, taste, touch, sound is enhanced for Odhrán and he will hear sounds that most of us don’t even know exists. He is incredibly affectionate but also can become highly emotionally disregulated due to frustration and lack of understanding from others around him.
Autism NI work daily without government funding towards awareness and acceptance of Autism. The support and guidance they provide to families I would love to say is priceless but in fact there is a cost and that’s why we are fundraising.
Now if you know me, you will know I can barely go for a 10 minute walk let alone complete a leg of the marathon relay but my wee man is worth it all and more. There are around 20 of us as family and friends participating and we would love it if you could donate anything big or small to our cause.
From a very grateful mummy of a super special boy and his fabulous and caring big sister,
Ciara, Niamh and Odhrán
