Story
The Lilies have been sailing together now for just over a year, and we have had the best fun and learned so much about sailing and ourselves during this time.
We race and cruise regularly in Lough Swilly, Co Donegal, but have decided it was time to sail out of the lough and have taken on the challenge to Sail Around Ireland on June 1st 2023. We love the water and realize just how lucky we are to get to enjoy it through Sailing.
Therefore we want to do something good and give back a little, and we though providing clean safe water was a great fit for the Lilies.
We plan to raise enough to be able to completely fund the building of a well for a village called Leman Ayitu Kebelem.
In this village there are 110 households and a school, all of which have no access to clean water. Often it is the children who have to walk long distances to fetch the water. There are high levels of poverty and most families live on less than $1.25. They mainly use the agricultural land for cattle grazing and maize crop. There is a great sense of community, interdependence and a strong local Oromia culture.
This well will be life changing. They will no longer have to make those long, often dangerous trips to fetch water and won't be sick from drinking the dirty water.
Sadly – Water related disease is the single biggest killer of infants in Ethiopia
32 Million people in Ethiopia don’t have access to clean water
8,500 children under-five die in Ethiopia per year due to diarrhoea
Water-related diseases such as Cholera, Typhoid and Dysentery cause 3.4 million deaths globally each year.
Thank you so much for any support you can give us!
