Story
I and most of the c. 500 runners and walkers have successfully completed their runs or walks and the total distance covered will be many times the 750 kms long Separation Wall. I met a small group of runners just before 10am today (Sat 27 March) in Knole Park and we listened to the Amos Trust Run the Wall live Zoom feed to count down to the official START for us and many other supporters in UK. There were 5 of us, Rukhan, Tim, Faris, Pili and myself but since Rukhan had already run his 10km, we 4 set off. Pili peeled off after 5km and waited for me to say that Tim and Faris had decided that they would do another 5km. I set off for my second 5km as planned but following a different route to try and minimise the uphill gradient which I knew was waiting at the end of the 10km. The cold, brisk wind had backed from SW into the S so for the next 3km it was on my nose but then eased off and in the sun it was warm. As we ran around we handed out slips of paper with URLs where people could go to find out about the Story behind RTW and if they wished to make a donation. Most people were interested and happy to take the slips so we were pleased that perhaps 50 more families will learn about the suffering created by the Separation Wall.
I have raised the target by £1000 since I cannot THANK YOU enough for the loving support for the Palestinians. The Amos Trust total has received nearly double its target of £15,000 to rebuild a Palestinian home that had been illegally demolished by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF). I know Amos Trust and their partners in Gaza and the West Bank and in Jerusalem will use all the funds we can raise, wisely and to help the weakest.
One of my supporters said to me: "I am 92 now and I want to support you for your run. I have a close affinity with that part of the world since I was there in 1948 at the founding of Israel. I was in a tank regiment (4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards) and we were the last to leave in June after the end of the Mandate in May. I often think back how I left school when I was 18 and was in charge of a tank in Palestine when I was 19! I took over from one of our men who was killed by a sniper. I was at Ramat David when we were bombed by the Egyptian Air Force. We left Haifa in June and went to Tripoli (Sabratha) for the next 14 months. I am a member of the PVA (Palestine Veterans Ass.) and receive regular Newsletters. Good luck."
This type of message shows how much we still have to do. Thank you ALL for your support. Peter Ashwell
