Story
The Round the Grounds Riders are riding for Lymphoma Action. Here is Hugh's story:
One Saturday night last August, I found myself staggering, slurring, puking and generally rambling nonsense. A perfectly normal Saturday you might think, but I had been like this for days and more tellingly – booze was not involved. This was in fact the beginning of a very long battle with Central Nervous System (CNS) Lymphoma. I had a five-centimeter tumor in my brain, which the amazing team at Kings College Hospital successfully removed. But it took months of hospitalisation and chemotherapy treatment to allow me to have a successful Stem Cell Transplant and get this shitty cancer into remission.
The staff at Kings saved my life, and my friends and family rallied round in an extraordinary way and have been so supportive over the last few months. (Thank you all so much!) And an organisation that has helped me greatly throughout (and continues to) is Lymphoma Action, the UK’s only charity dedicated to lymphoma. The charity has recently had to launch an emergency appeal as it struggles to cope with a three-fold increase in hotline calls since lockdown began and the cancelation of crucial fundraising events.
On the 18th July, 30 riders will be cycling 100 km (62 miles) From Selhurst Park on a circular tour of all London’s 12 football league grounds to raise money for Lymphoma Action. We will make an extra 13th stop, finishing at Champion Hill, the home of Dulwich Hamlet.
Thank you in advance to all sponsors for your donations. And thanks also to the posse of cyclists making the trip and bravely squeezing into the old cycle gear to raise cash for Lymphoma Action. Thanks loads folks!
