Crisis after crisis after crisis: families in east Africa are facing the worst hunger emergency of a generation.
rippleeffect.org/emergency
Our programmes build long-term solutions to hunger and poverty. But the rural families we work with are facing an unprecedented triple crisis right now. Weeks away from the planting season, we must act now.
Crisis 1: Covid
Lockdowns of rural communities closed markets and slashed rural incomes. The aftermath: people still have fewer livestock and severely depleted food stocks and savings.
Crisis 2: Global cost of living
East Africa is a major importer of wheat, maize and seed oils for cooking. The war in Ukraine has helped to drive food inflation up by an average of 30%.
Crisis 3: Climate
Chaotic rain seasons disrupt planting and drive invasions of pests such as desert locusts. Droughts in the Horn of Africa since 2020 mean crops have failed and millions of livestock have died.
The result: the worst hunger emergency in 40 years When rural communities can’t grow their way out of hunger, parents don’t eat in order to feed their children.
No income means children are taken out of school, and no money to pay medical fees.
No harvest means farmers have no seeds for the next season’s planting.
We urgently need to provide seeds, tools and training to these farmers.
Please give what you can
x3 The ripple effect of our work is that each family will share their knowledge, skills and resources with three more: trebling the impact.
