This could be Turkey’s largest earthquake. Buildings have collapsed, and thousands are still unaccounted for. It’s feared that they’re trapped among the rubble of their homes and the rescue operation could be hampered by the current snowstorms which are expected to continue until Thursday. Millions of Syrian refugees live close to the epicentre. Turkey is the world’s largest host of refugees with 3.7 million Syrians taking refuge in the country. The healthcare system in Syria is overwhelmed and some hospitals have sadly been damaged by the earthquake. Human Appeal is on the ground. Tens of thousands of homes have been affected, and families are now living in temporary accommodation. Human Appeal is on the ground right now working in close coordination with the local authorities, monitoring the events and participating in the humanitarian efforts to provide vital assistance to affected families, who are in urgent need.
