Story
NU-Cycle 2023
Northumbria is a research-intensive university, that unlocks potential for all, changing lives regionally, nationally and internationally. We are raising vital funds to support our students.
Last year, we launched our Higher Education Without Barriers Fund, to enable motivated students to succeed at Northumbria regardless of their background. So far more than £2.5 million has been raised and over 2,000 students have benefited from outreach activities, scholarships, hardship bursaries, mental health and wellbeing initiatives, and student enterprise and volunteering opportunities.
During the month of October we are cycling to raise money for the Fund
Northumbria’s students, alumni, staff and business partners have signed-up to cycle between 30 and 300 miles during October, either individually or as part of a group, to raise money for our students.
As part of this month-long cycle-a-thon, a team of Northumbria alumni and staff are cycling - 300 miles over four days, starting on 17 October - from our London to Newcastle Campus.
Sport as an enabler of social mobility is an important part of the Fund and money raised from NU-Cycle will provide more students with:
• Alternate routes into study, with sport scholarships, so they can pursue their degree and develop their talents as athletes, coaches or officials;
• Sport volunteering and work experience opportunities that will help them to develop new networks and enhance their leadership and employability skills;
• Learning resources, kit and equipment to reach their potential in sport and increase diversity in the sporting arena;
• Opportunities to take part in physical activity, developing their teamworking skills, and enabling them to experience the benefits of an active lifestyle; and
• Mental health and wellbeing initiatives to support them during their studies
So far we have raised £66,480 for Higher Education Without Barriers sport - so get on your bike today and help us to raise even more.
