Story
We are running the London Landmarks Half Marathon for Dementia UK.
We have chosen Dementia Uk because Nicky’s very special mum is living with dementia and we see her struggle with everyday tasks, being trapped in a totally different world to the life she once had and loved.
We are lucky, Mum still remembers us at the moment but we know there will be a day that we will walk into the room and.she will not recognise us. Nicky says ‘Mums Dementia feels like a bereavement to me, I miss her everyday, I miss my chats and laughs with her. Don’t get me wrong. I still talk to mum, but she finds it hard to find the words to talk back - I love it when she smiles at me and squeezes my hand.’
As a personal tribute to mum, grandparents, and many friends who have family suffering from this disease, this year feels the year to set ourself this challenge. If mum can battle with dementia everyday, we can spend a few hours running.
I (Nicky) have never run a half marathon before and so Karl will be running with me and providing me with that much needed encouragement to keep me going on race day but also during the many training runs.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story.
Please only give if you can and would like to, any amount will be helpful. Your support and encouragement even better, especially if you see us out running !!
Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nurse charity. Our nurses, called Admiral Nurses, provide life-changing care to families affected by all forms of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. They help people with dementia stay independent for longer, and support the people caring for them so they have the strength to cope with the bad days, and the energy to enjoy the good days. They have the time to listen and the knowledge to solve problems, helping families take back control when they are struggling.
