Story
Were taking part in the official Dry January and raising money for Alcohol Change UK because alcohol does too much harm here in the UK.
At University the pressure to drink to excess can be immense, and as much as we like to have fun as a club, were aware of the negative effects alcohol can have on individuals both physically and mentally. For that reason, LSE boxing club have decided to take on dry January.
Recent studies have found :
There’s still a strong association of university life being associated with excessive alcohol consumption - 76% say there’s an expectation for students to drink to get drunk and 79% agree that drinking and getting drunk is part of university culture.
One in ten claim to be aware of safe or responsible drinking campaigns/activities at their university, however only 1% had been part of these campaigns/activities. Although half feel there are enough social events at university that don’t involve drinking, almost a quarter feel there should be more.
Peer pressure is still seen as an issue for students – 70% think that students drink alcohol to fit in with their peers
A survey of undergraduates in seven universities in England found very high rates of dangerous drinking, with 41% identified as ‘hazardous drinkers’, 11% ‘harmful drinkers’ and a further 10% as ‘probably alcohol dependent’. One in five students were likely to have a diagnosable alcohol use disorder.
Thus, we as a committee and a club think its really important for us to participate in Dry January 2020. Were asking for donations to our campaign in order to raise money for Alochol change UK, an amazing charity that does an extensive amount of work to help those who have felt the Mal effects of alcohol drinking, as well as offering a support system, they also fund research into effective policy changes.
Wish us luck, any little helps
