LFR Annual Charity 2025/6 - Beat SCAD
Each year Leighton Fun Runners nominates a charity and holds regular events to try and raise as much money and awareness as possible for that charity. LFR raises money for its chosen good cause in many ways: through the races it organises; through quizzes and themed events, such as our Breakfast Run and Ho Ho Ho Bingo; by encouraging charitable donations and through the sponsorship of runners at key racing events. Once a month the club hosts an event, called 5caKe night, where members come back to the clubhouse after running for tea and cake, and this evening is also used as a fundraiser, with raffles and collection boxes. Finally, the ever-popular Leighton 10k race is the biggest charity fundraiser held in Spring each year.
Each month there are fundraising activities you can enjoy and take part in so please check the LFR website and Facebook page for more details! And feel free to link any fabulous fundraising activities you are doing to this official LFR fundraising Just Giving page.
About the charity
The 2025-2026 LFR charity is Beat SCAD. Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD) is an under-diagnosed and poorly understood heart condition.
SCAD patients have few or none of the traditional risk factors associated with heart disease. More research is needed to understand why fit, healthy people have SCADs.
Beat SCAD aims to raise funds for vital research; to raise awareness of the condition amongst the public and medical profession and to support people affected by SCAD. The registered charity is run by volunteers, most of whom have personally experienced a SCAD, and it collaborates closely with Dr David Adlam and his research team from Glenfield Hospital, Leicester.
Why Beat SCAD?
Nic's partner Stef, suffered a SCAD in January 2025 and although she is recovering well, the future is uncertain. The lack of specific guidance provided by the hospital and subsequent months of waiting to see both cardio rehab teams and a specialist have been hugely stressful. Beat SCAD was the only organisation offering tailored and personal support: for that, the family are truly grateful. The family are delighted that through LFR and its wonderful runners and supporters, Beat SCAD will be able to fund more research into the condition and continue to educate medical professionals and support SCAD survivors.
