Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my Just Giving page.
As it’s not possible to split the money between two charities I have created a team with two charities - Prostate Cancer UK and the RNLI. I have paid for the challenge in full and 100% of your donations will go directly to the charity.
In October 2024 I will be taking on a challenge of a life time, I will be setting off from Orkney and flying to Africa to climb to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, all to raise as much money as I can for Prostate Cancer UK and the RNLI.
As part of my fitness training I’m taking part in Loch Ness 24 with two other lifeboat crewmembers on Saturday 24th August and as a team of 3 we are hoping to run at least 168km over 24 hours for the RNLI.
On the 3rd October I’ll fly from the UK to start my 72km trail that will take me through both the blistering heat and freezing cold temperatures, the dense rain forests and extremely thin air, I could be climbing for up to twelve hours a day, whilst sleeping in basic tents up the mountain. All going well I’m planning on reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) 5 days later.
Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano located in the Kilimanjaro National Park in Tanzania, near to the country’s border with Kenya. The average temperature at the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro is -7°C (19°F). It is famous for being the highest mountain in Africa and is one of the ‘Seven Summits’ of the World.
My Dad was recently diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. He is currently awaiting an operation and treatment in October and that’s why I've chosen Prostate Cancer UK as one of my charities.
I’m hoping to raise £1000 for Prostate Cancer UK. Again, all the money raised will go directly to Prostate Cancer UK to help fund the research to stop prostate cancer killing men.
The RNLI has been a big part of my life, not only due to living on an island, but growing up and going fishing with my grandad during school holidays and I now work at sea myself. The lifeboat is also in my family, my father has been on the crew for over 42 years, so I grew up around the lifeboat and the pager! I have been part of the Kirkwall crew for over 16 years and my brother has been part of the Kirkwall crew for 11 years. Although my Father, Brother and I are all part of the same Lifeboat crew the RNLI have a policy that 3 family members can’t go out on a service shout at the same time, this goes back to the Tragic disaster of the Longhope Lifeboat in Orkney in 1969 where the lifeboat's entire crew of eight lost their lives, three of who were from one family.
I’m also hoping to raise £1000 for the RNLI, all the money raised will go directly to the RNLI and help save more lives at sea.
I would be very grateful of any donations to help hit my target and hopefully go beyond.
I’d also encourage people to Gift Aid their donation – They get an extra 25p for every pound donated.
Thank You!
Who is Prostate Cancer UK and what do they do?
"Prostate Cancer UK's top priority is funding research to stop prostate cancer killing men. We’re investing millions to find better treatments and better tests that can spot fast-growing cancers early, and could be used in a screening program to save thousands of lives"
Across the UK;
About 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men.
More than 52,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year on average – that's 144 men every day.
Every 45 minutes one man dies from prostate cancer – that's more than 12,000 men every year.
Around 490,000 men are living with and after prostate cancer.
What do the RNLI do?
“Every day of every year, people of all backgrounds get into danger in the water. It’s a problem that we’re here to tackle."
Too many people are still drowning. More than ever we need the RNLI’s help. As a charity, the RNLI depends on our donations so it can go on saving lives and keeping us and our loved ones safe.
RNLI lifesavers are our lifeline. They’re the lifeboat crews who provide 24-hour search and rescue right around the UK and Ireland 365 days a year. The RNLI safety teams and educators working tirelessly to stop people getting into trouble in the first place. Every year, our volunteer lifeboat crews and lifeguards help and rescue thousands of people and have saved over 144,00 lives since 1824.
